It's late in the afternoon, and the air is beginning to cool, when the chimes play again over the park loudspeaker. "All of us here at Dreamland wish you luck, guests! Let's meet up in the Hall of Mirrors!" Wherever you are, it's time to make your way over to the House of Horrors, where you'll have to brave the funhouse to find the room on the top floor. Don't delay, or your guest identification bracelet will begin beeping. The House of Mirrors is a large room, more than capable of fitting a crowd. Tall mirrors line every wall, and the door you entered through seems to vanish into a mirror as well. The mirrors give the impression that many, many more are among your number, standing in the background. In the back is a jar filled with blank raffle tickets. You'll have to take a ticket, write down a name, and place it back in the jar. Well, with who we know so far, it would seem that "suspicious" would mean being rather unassuming. Or at least not exactly the cold-blooded killers we had been imagining. I still have a hard time imagining Royce, Ibuki, or Edea murdering anyone, but... Apparently that is the case.

Was Maya cleared? She's the same kind of airhead as Ibuki.

I will not allow Missile to answer with the name of a clear whenever it is asked.

Once we have a few names for an accusation, I will see if any have merit.

If we're talking about 'personalities least likely to kill', we need to think about the ditzy types. And she was the one who pushed hardest for Ibuki's innocence. Either she's a sap or she's suspicious.

Um... I think that's just the sort of person Maya is, honestly. She sounded like she cared more about making sure everyone who was accused had a defense, you know? A good defense is important to her.

I don't think we need to worry about her.

I agree. And... I think that after what happened to Francis and Nui, the VIPs wouldn't want to risk looking suspicious by trying to defend someone that they know is guilty.

Like I said, she's either a sap or suspicious. I think it's worth finding out which.

In fact, I do not believe Royce spoke up for Edea or Mioda, and I do not believe Mioda spoke up for Edea.

That may be a more useful pattern.

But she never really tried to put up a defense for anyone before Ibuki.

Yeah, but... You have to look at the timing, too. It followed on the heels of executing someone who was innocent because we thought their buddy was a VIP, as we didn't listen to a word of defense for either of them.

If you're gonna accuse her, at least bring my name up too. I offered myself to the VIPs, the bomber, and everyone else knowing that I'd be standing up for Ibuki.

You said you didn't care if she was VIP, not insisted that she wasn't.

Of course I should be investigated, everyone should, but I willingly stood by her knowing she was a VIP because she's my friend.

It was a risk I was willing to take. Edea and Ibuki didn't do anything like that.

I agree. We must also abandon any notions that a person cannot be a killer because of the people who were killed.

I would not have expected Ibuki Mioda to kill those two, and yet, she did.

If you want to look at it that way, killing people you're close to would push suspicion away from you, right? [Belgium doesn't really want to think like that, but it's a possibility.]

It's a possibility.

Hmph...where we come from, the notion that comrades would never betray one another is folly indeed. This is why it was not difficult for Pekoyama and I to accept that truth. Even though others insisted on our behalf that Mioda would never have done it...and indeed, ordinarily, she would not have, but we cannot know what motives were used. Pekoyama and I understood this, and understand it still.

The place you're from sounds like a pretty tough place to be. [But it's probably helping out here.] There are definitely others who'd be less likely to want to think about something like that. I can't really blame them! But I guess anyone can be a VIP at this point. [Considering who they've executed as VIPs by this point.]

Indeed. Anyone.

And in any case, is not being carried away by sentiment an insult to those who we found to be VIP and killed? Was not the insistence Mioda could not be a VIP a grave insult to Edea?

They will allow their friends to be killed. We know that now.

[Mori is frowning. Well, he usually is, but it's different now.]

[ His grimace deepens, just becoming lightly irritated at this point. Why can't it be straightforward murders, gosh!! ]

So really, it scarcely helps us at all, since we could very well be VIPs and not know it, based on Ibuki's reaction especially...

It is true. Not knowing their motives...it is harder to make a guess at their actions.

They might not even know their own motives. Who knows? Ibuki defended her innocence until the very end.

[ Ciel sighs, shaking his head ]

I wish the buddy cops had explained their reasoning a bit better. At this point, I can see in theory where their logic could come from, since they're operating with more knowledge than we are, but without it, we are trusting blindly.

Heh. These are the same cops who failed to find a single killer until the fifth night.

That is why I, too, am hesitant. But if you hesitate, then won't you name an alternate?
