dreamland day one

41 players remaining.

[As the day wears on into the afternoon, the dead aren't getting any deader. It's late in the afternoon, and the air is beginning to cool, when the chimes play again over the park loudspeaker.
"All of us here at Dreamland wish you luck, guests! Let's meet up in the Hall of Mirrors!"

Wherever you are, it's time to make your way over to the House of Horrors, where you'll have to brave the funhouse to find the room on the top floor. Don't delay, or your guest identification bracelet will begin beeping. The House of Mirrors is a large room, more than capable of fitting a crowd. Tall mirrors line every wall, and the door you entered through seems to vanish into a mirror as well. The mirrors give the impression that many, many more are among your number, standing in the background.

In the back is a jar filled with blank raffle tickets. You'll have to take a ticket, write down a name, and place it back in the jar. Hopefully you already know who you're voting for, but if not, you only have time for a brief discussion before you're out of time.

Isn't there some law of robotics where they can't lie or kill people anyway? Unless they took that outta them.

You are speaking of Isaac Asimov's Laws or Robotics, Clash. However those laws are just a type of programming robots go under. Not all robots are necessarily programmed with them however.

[ She shrugs. ]

I just remember what I've seen in movies and stuff, I've never run into actual robots before so I just assumed. So it's possible, but I still don't think even that's a good enough excuse to lynch them. It's way too obvious this early on anyway.

Asimov's Laws. These do exist. However, they exist only in fiction. They would not cover all cases. They were discarded as feasible in the development of VIs.

[ a pause, then, ]

We are not required to follow such protocols.

What about the sticker promise?! Legion-chan, you decided to go along with that, right?

Yes. We wished to learn more, so we acknowledged this promise.

What kinda protocols do you follow?

We are familiar with and able to follow all known protocols used in Council Space. We have been recently updated with protocols to allow for massive multiplayer online gaming.

You can really play games?

[ She doesn't know what "online gaming" is, but she caught the multiplayer and gaming part. That's what makes the most sense to her out of all of that. ]

Yes. The challenges posed in games help to speed up our onboard processors and help us learn. They are especially useful to calibrate sniping programs.

So... what if they've programmed you to think this is a game? That obviously means you're not deciding to do it on your own, but if that's what they've done to you... then would it be possible to view something like this as some kind of video game?

Yes. We wish to learn more, so we will not harm organics. The exception is if organics threaten our existence. Then we will fight back, but no more. We will meet peace with peace.

[ because yeah legion wouldn't exactly hesitate to snipe someone if they were trying to kill that first, but... that's mostly video game logic at work... ]

The three laws of robotics, yeah.

[ This sounds familiar... ]

"1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm."

...

But there's the Zeroth Law, too.

I only know it from science-fiction media. You know like A.I.s and holograms, that kinda stuff. What's the Zeroth Law?
siggey: can you believe he's gonna be a genius (hnng)

[personal profile] siggey 2014-09-24 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know what you mean. The Zeroth law was made by Asimov too, the same guy who created the first three. It basically says that a robot can harm an individual human being, as long as that act benefits the concept of humanity as a whole. Like if a mass murderer is killed, for example, or someone who's carrying a really dangerous plague.

What if they reprogrammed them though? Like... to think that we're the ones who aren't benefitting humanity by this game.

Not that there's any proof they did that, but it's not like it isn't a possibility. We shouldn't vote to execute them right now, but... we might have to look into it more.
siggey: (finals...)

[personal profile] siggey 2014-09-24 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
There's nothing humane about this game, and I'm not going to hold it against anything if they want to put a stop to it.

[ It may have come out more bitter than I intended. I shrug, rubbing my arm. Man, the digging earlier WAS more work than I gambled for. ]

Besides, Legion's from the future where intergalactic space travel apparently exists. That means his programmer may not even be human, and who knows how much robotics would've developed by then?

Anyway, I'm voting no one. That note's shitty evidence, and by execution through votes, we'd be doing the same thing as the VIPs.
5_9: doRun.run(); (// ... "a doo run run")

[personal profile] 5_9 2014-09-24 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Piping up, ] Our programmer was not human. Our original programs were written by Quarians. However, our programs now are self-maintaining. It is more accurate to say that we write our own programs.
